Why We Repeat Mistakes

According to the APA, most parents parent the way they were parented — unconsciously. Dr. Daniel Siegel calls this the "legacy of unexamined patterns." Awareness is the first step to change.

Top 10 Mistakes

1. Overprotection — creates anxiety. 2. Inconsistency — teaches rules are negotiable. 3. Comparing — destroys self-esteem. 4. Lack of quality time — 15 focused minutes beat 3 distracted hours. 5. Yelling — as harmful as physical punishment (University of Pittsburgh). 6. Constant rewards — kills intrinsic motivation. 7. Not listening — says "you're not important." 8. Projecting desires — the child has their own dreams. 9. Fighting in front of children — linked to anxiety and depression. 10. Never apologizing — teaches that mistakes should be hidden.

As Dr. Winnicott said, children don't need perfect parents — they need "good enough" parents who try, make mistakes, and try again.
